Exercise

How to make exercise work for you.

What is your main reason for exercise?

To get fit, for mental health, to look good, blah blah blah...These are all generic reasons that we have been TOLD should be our reasons, right? But let’s face it on a day to day basis, how much personal meaning do they have for you? Clearly not enough if we are still falling off the exercise wagon.

Sooo what are OUR reasons?

The likely answer is that we don’t know yet. And that is fine! Let the investigation begin...So, you can never quite incorporate exercise and physical expression into everyday life, and I believe, this is because the generic reasons don’t have enough personal meaning to drive us to actually do it. And another important question, is there currently an unrealistic all or nothing, self-sabotaging, self-judgey approach that we are choosing? Like most people, perhaps that is yes, and therefore through no fault of our own we continually feel disconnected and despaired at our current relationship with exercise. But, if we could change that relationship and all the connotations we have formed with exercise, we would start to live a life that is truly expansive and fulfilled all the while truly loving living in our very own body.

My radical perspective on exercise.

I believe that if you noticed that when you connect to your legs in the morning, you feel more grounded, and so you can cope with all the emotional chaos in your life. You would be more inspired to do squats (or something with your legs!). If you allowed yourself to cry, sing or grunt as you explore challenging exercises and saw how much pent up frustration or anger you were releasing, you would feel the pull to move. As you jumped up and down, you could feel that you were shaking up stagnant energy in your body, like shaking up a snow globe. Exercise would be your go to. As you lay on the floor with your legs up the wall, feeling into the sensational experience of your feet above your heart, and you observed the softening of your mind and a willingness to let go of all of the things that did or didn’t happen that day, you would utilise the power of connecting to your body. As you played around in handstands or simply hanging up side down, you realised how boring you had got and just how important it is to actually enjoy your life too, you would want to play more in your body. As you performed the notoriously uncomfortable hamstring stretch and you noticed how much you were avoiding feeling uncomfortableness in that moment and most likely in all areas of your life. The stretch would become an opportunity to explore being present and accepting of uncomfortableness, so that you can go beyond self imposed limitations in your body AND in your life. You would use your body EVERYDAY and it would be your norm.

I know why exercise is meaningful to me. But now it is your time to investigate how exercise can be meaningful to you. So you REALLY do want to move and utilise your magnificent body all the time! I believe this approach is revolutionary and it is going to change our relationships to our bodies forever.

Let's embrace a new paradigm.

It is well and truly time to kiss goodbye to the fearing mongering phrase of “Go hard of go home”, and welcome in the POWERFUL, JUICY & SACRED experience that says “Investigate your body and make it a safe home to live in and deeply enjoy”.

And the beauty of working in this intuitive way with people on a 1-2-1 basis, is that firstly it is really much more interesting, and secondly it is authentic to the needs of that wonderfully unique individual I am coaching. In my sessions we co-create and find out how exercise and physical expression can be deeply MEANINGFUL and actually USEFUL in their unfolding lives. In the process their bodies become radiant AND so do they, AND they feel empowered going forward. This is transformative stuff. I teach people how to TRUST their bodies again.

Perhaps you might take time to reflect on just how much you are currently self-sabotaging your own physical progression, when you continue to ignore your body on a daily basis. And how much joy and pleasure there is to be gained from experiencing the world through your body. Please note that this time to reflect is not another opportunity to berate yourself! Just a very useful self-enquiry.
